The Anime NYC convention wrapped up its summer event in New York City last month, drawing large crowds of anime enthusiasts but also confronting organizational challenges due to expanded space and a new timing. Held from August 22-25 at the Javits Center, the convention saw dedicated cosplay participation, popular panel discussions, and a marketplace for merchandise. However, long entry lines and some disappointing absences of expected guests left some attendees feeling the convention still has room to improve.
This year was the first time Anime NYC took place in August rather than November. Organizers expanded the venue significantly to occupy almost the entire Javits Center compared to previous years confined to one hall. The larger footprint aimed to provide more events and space for fans. But attendees reported frustration with waiting hours in entry lines despite many doors remaining unused. Once inside, crowded conditions were still common and navigation could be difficult within the expanded layout.
This Anime NYC cosplay stole the show for me, so whoever did this, kudos #animenyc pic.twitter.com/OckBoWHyLp

Several panel discussions drew huge audiences, such as one welcoming over 1,000 fans to learn about the animated series Haikyu. However, the larger panels also led to cases of disorder as eager viewers pushed to get good seats. On the exhibit floor, positive feedback highlighted areas like the dedicated gaming zone. But some missing or downsized booths from major anime companies left some wishing for a stronger industry presence compared to prior conventions.
The passion of costumed fans or “cosplayers” stayed a popular attraction. One detailed outfit recreating a memorable scene became a social media sensation overnight. Cosplay highlights reinforced the popularity of shows like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, which many consider defining of the current era. Panel discussions around representation also found an engaged audience.
While next year may see how the new August timing fares against competition, this Anime NYC showed both the commitment of anime supporters and opportunities for organizers to refine the experience. Addressing entry flow, guest selection, and exhibitor participation could help strengthen an event that celebrates creativity at the intersection of art and community.
