Valerie Curry, the actress known for portraying the character Firecracker on the Amazon Prime TV show “The Boys,” expressed concerns about fan behavior after an incident at the recent Comic Con Northern Ireland convention. Curry said certain cosplaying fans repeatedly made jokes referencing a controversial scene from the show, making her feel uncomfortable.
In a video posted to Instagram, Curry said while most fans were respectful, a small group dressed as the character Homelander took jokes too far by repeatedly bringing up a breastfeeding scene from the show. Curry stated she made it clear this made her feel uneasy, but it seemed to only anger the fans more. She stressed the importance of separating fictional characters from real people.
Curry said she’s enjoyed meeting fans at past conventions but certain boundaries must be set. Interactions need to respect that actors are not their on-screen roles in real life. The organizers of the Northern Ireland event also spoke out, reminding attendees they should treat all guests, including Curry, with respect.
This issue highlights ongoing challenges for actors when devoted fans sometimes blur fiction with reality. As the entertainment industry continues finding ways to ensure safety and comfort for celebrities, Curry’s experience serves as an example of why certain behaviors will not be tolerated. She hopes to keep participating in fan events as long as proper guidelines are followed.
