Netflix Turns Character Actor Lee Jung-eun Into an Action Star for “The Shooter”

Four years after "Juvenile Justice," Lee Jung-eun and Kim Moo-yul reunite for a noir thriller about a grandmother who picks up a gun to protect her family.

Netflix confirmed production Wednesday on “The Shooter,” an action-noir series pairing veteran character actor Lee Jung-eun with Kim Moo-yul in a story about a grandmother turned gunwoman. Lee Jung Eun and Kim Mu Yeol will lead the upcoming Netflix revenge action-thriller K-drama. The role marks new territory for Lee, who built her reputation on dramatic supporting turns rather than gunplay.

The show follows Jeong Suk-ja, a woman in her seventies whose quiet routine is shattered when her grandson is attacked, forcing her to pick up a firearm for the first time since she was young. Netflix describes her as a woman who raised her grandson alone while working at a restaurant, only for his life to hang in the balance after an assault by unknown attackers. That violence pulls her toward the Chunghwa Group, a criminal enterprise with reach into legitimate business, and into a wary alliance with an operative whose motives stay murky through much of the run.

Kim Moo-yul plays that operative, Seo Yeon-woo, opposite Lee. Director Lee Kwon, who built a following through the action series “A Shop for Killers,” steers the production from a script by Kim Hee-su, with Studio Dragon producing for Netflix. Huh Joon-ho plays Jang Kwang-cheol, a former gang leader who now runs Chunghwa Group as chairman, while Choi Sung-eun, Bae Na-ra, Seo Hyun-woo and Moon Jong-won fill out the group’s inner circle.

Lee and Kim have worked together before. The pair previously co-starred in Netflix’s “Juvenile Justice,” and “The Shooter” reunites them four years later. Lee arrives with box-office momentum: her recent film “My Daughter Is a Zombie” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2025, pulling in $38 million. Kim’s recent credit carries similar weight. His series “Teach You a Lesson” ranked among Netflix’s ten most-watched shows worldwide in the first half of 2026, logging 48 million views.

The casting lands amid a Korean content push that shows no sign of slowing. Company executives have described Korean-language programming as the platform’s second-largest content category worldwide, trailing only English-language titles. More than 210 Korean titles have landed in Netflix’s global top ten over the past five years, a run that has turned character actors like Lee into action leads and elevated once-niche genre fare into some of the service’s most-watched programming anywhere.
