A new drama series will tell the personal story of a man’s decades-long search for answers following the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. Premiering in January 2025 on Peacock, “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” stars Colin Firth as Dr. Jim Swire. The series will follow Dr. Swire in the aftermath of Pan Am Flight 103’s downing over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. The terrorist attack killed all 259 people aboard the plane and 11 more on the ground.
After his daughter died in the bombing, Dr. Swire dedicated himself to learning the full truth about what happened. The limited series explores Swire’s relentless pursuit of answers from government officials. In a trailer, Firth portrays Swire confronting authorities while asking “How far would you go to search for justice after your daughter was killed?” Over time, Swire became a spokesperson for UK families of the Lockerbie victims.
The show spans decades as it tracks Swire’s emotional journey across continents. He dogs efforts to get transparency from governments and challenge assumptions of the justice system. Along the way, Swire’s quest threatens both his personal well-being and faith in the legal process. Catherine McCormack plays Swire’s wife Jane, supporting him as he grieves their daughter’s loss. Other cast members take on roles affected by the bombing from different perspectives.
Behind the camera, director Otto Bathurst brings experience telling complex character stories. His previous work on shows like “Halo” and “His Dark Materials” suggests an in-depth look at how tragedy psychologically impacts those left behind. By focusing on Swire’s story, the limited series examines issues like resilience against grief, fulfilling a victim’s memory, and society’s duty to uncover truths from mass casualties like the Lockerbie bombing.
As the deadliest terrorist attack in modern British history, Lockerbie continues echoing over 35 years later. Premiering in early 2025, “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” promises a poignant and thought-provoking look at loss and what drives abereaved father’s fight for closure.
