Actor Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at a fan event in New York City on Sunday. Over 2,700 people had RSVP’d for the Timothée Chalamet Look-Alike Contest held in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park.
Contest organizers expected hundreds of admirers to compete for a $50 prize by mimicking Chalamet’s acting roles and style.
The event took an unexpected turn when the real Chalamet showed up. Sporting a mustache and shorter hair for an upcoming film role, Chalamet greeted fans and interacted with some of the contestants. Videos posted on social media capture fans’ shock and excitement upon realizing the star had joined them.

Despite inspiring the contest, Chalamet did not end up winning. That honor went to 21-year-old college student Miles Mitchell, who impressed judges with his portrayal of Chalamet’s “Wonka” character.
However, the large crowds began exceeding safe capacity levels. Local authorities declared the gathering unlawful and at least one person was arrested. Most attendees then relocated nearby, where some Chalamet lookalikes participated in casual meet-and-greet sessions with fans.
The 26-year-old actor is currently in New York filming two major movies. He stars as table tennis champion Marty Reisman in Josh Safdie’s upcoming sports drama “Marty Supreme.” Timothée Chalamet is also portraying Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s biopic “A Complete Unknown,” which required him to perform original singing and instrumentals.
