Actor Glen Powell transformed a celebrity lookalike contest into a memorable event for Austin fans, delivering an amazing reward that goes above and beyond typical fan interactions. Despite being abroad for film production, Powell virtually competed in the Sunday tournament at Town Lake Park’s Auditorium Shores.
The actor used FaceTime to creatively engage contestants, combining humor with an unexpected chance. Powell revealed that the contest winner will receive an unusual prize: a guaranteed cameo appearance for a family member in his future film.
“I am completely serious,” Powell stated in his virtual address. “The winner gets their parents or family member a cameo in my next movie.” The award, which he sarcastically valued at $6 billion, exemplifies the actor’s commitment to his city and his lighthearted approach to fan interaction.
The event attracted hundreds of competitors eager to show off their likeness to the Texas-born singer. Contestants portrayed Powell’s different cinematic roles, ranging from “Hit Man” to “Twisters” characters. Torchy’s Tacos’ red devil mascot and a dog resembling Powell’s rescue pet, Brisket, contributed local character.
Powell’s mother and aunt assisted in selecting the winner, Max Braunstein, who won extra prizes including a cowboy hat, a year’s supply of Torchy’s queso, and a cash award. The event is part of a rising trend of celebrity lookalike contests that have spread virally throughout major cities.
The challenge follows a trend started by past celebrity events, such as Timothée Chalamet’s competition in New York City in October. Similar gatherings have since taken place in cities ranging from Los Angeles to Dublin, with lookalikes of celebrities such as Harry Styles and Paul Mescal.
Powell concluded his statement by encouraging participants to “keep Austin weird” and flashing the University of Texas “hook ’em Horns” hand sign, emphasizing his local roots and commitment to the community.
