Actor Matthew Lillard has played a memorable role in the “Scream” films for over 25 years now. However, the 54-year-old reveals that his involvement in the hit horror franchise did not immediately boost his Hollywood career as some might expect. Lillard first portrayed the character of Stu Macher in the original 1996 “Scream” movie. While that film was a massive box office success, Lillard says it “did not change” his career trajectory at the time.
Despite going on to appear in many other popular projects, Lillard says he still worries about not finding work. Even late in his decades-long career, uncertainty remains, much like legendary actor Jimmy Stewart reportedly felt. When looking back, Lillard now sees he was “destined” for a steadier career rather than instant fame.
Fans can look forward to seeing more of Lillard’s character in the upcoming seventh “Scream” film. Original writer Kevin Williamson returns to direct this installment, which Lillard believes puts the franchise “in a good place” once more. While he offers cautious praise, he also voiced some criticism. Specifically, Lillard questioned the increased violence seen in the most recent film, stating the iconic killer Ghostface may not need powerful weapons like a shotgun.
Major changes are coming with this new “Scream” chapter. Neve Campbell will reprise her role as beloved final girl Sidney Prescott, a primary reason for her highly-anticipated return. Meanwhile, Melissa Barrera has exited the franchise following controversy over online comments about geopolitical issues.Production of the still-untitled “Scream VII” is moving ahead with Campbell and Lillard both set to revisit beloved characters for loyal “Scream” followers.
