The teaser trailer for DC Studios’ next film, “Superman,” has set a new record, with over 250 million views in the first 24 hours. Filmmaker James Gunn announced the momentous news on social media, marking a historic achievement for both DC and Warner Bros.
“Krypto did take us home,” Gunn wrote on Friday, referring to Superman’s loyal dog who appears in the trailer. He pointed out: “With over 250 million views and a million social posts, ‘Superman’ is officially the most viewed and talked about trailer in DC and Warner Bros. history.”
While the Superman teaser’s performance is impressive, it falls short of Marvel’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” trailer, which has 365 million views. In comparison, other prominent 2024 film trailers, such as “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Inside Out 2,” received 167 million and 157 million views, respectively, in their first days.
The teaser gives us our first look at David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. It also features prominent DC Comics characters such as Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
In a recent interview, Gunn discussed his vision for the film. He highlighted the importance of fully embracing the Superman legend. “He has friends who are superheroes. He has folks he doesn’t get along with who are also superheroes,” Gunn said. He intends to show these characteristics groundedly, presenting a unique perspective on the iconic character.
This film represents a substantial shift in DC Studios’ strategy under Gunn’s management. Rather than repeating Superman’s origin narrative, the project aims to integrate him into a bigger superhero community, which differs from previous adaptations.
Wendell Pierce stars as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord in the film. John Murphy, who has previously worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, will compose the score.
“Superman” is set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2024.
