Mubi has acquired Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value for distribution in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, and India. The announcement came during the Cannes Film Festival press conference in Paris, shortly after the film was named as part of the 2025 official competition lineup.
This is Trier’s sixth feature and reunites him with screenwriter Eskil Vogt, with whom he previously co-wrote The Worst Person in the World and Oslo, August 31st. The cast includes Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning.
France’s mk2 Films is handling international sales for remaining territories. Sentimental Value is a co-production between companies based in Norway, France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Producers include Maria Ekerhovd for Mer Film and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Eye Eye Pictures in Norway.
Co-producing partners include Nathanael Karmitz for MK Productions and Juliette Schrameck for Lumen Production in France, Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film in Germany, Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa in Denmark, and Lizette Jonjic for Zentropa Sweden. The film also received backing from Film i Väst, Oslo Filmfond, and Mediefondet Zefyr.
BBC Film is involved in the UK, with Eva Yates credited as executive producer. Additional production companies include Alaz Film and Storyline.
This is the second project Trier has placed with Mubi. The platform previously distributed The Worst Person in the World in several international markets, including the UK, Ireland, Turkey, and India.
Mubi’s purchase of Sentimental Value was confirmed moments after the film’s inclusion in the Cannes competition lineup was announced by delegate general Thierry Frémaux. The company has expanded its acquisition activity in recent years, including securing The Substance before Cannes 2024, which later went on to commercial and awards success.
