Jason Bateman to Direct Tom Holland in John Grisham’s The Partner

Jason Bateman will direct Universal’s adaptation of John Grisham’s legal thriller The Partner, with Tom Holland in talks to star as a junior attorney who vanishes after stealing millions from a client. Bateman is also set to executive produce through Aggregate Films alongside Michael Costigan, while Holland will produce via his banner Billy17. The project, based on Grisham’s 1997 bestseller, continues a long-gestating screen path for the novel, which cycled through prior iterations before landing at Universal.

The story centers on a disillusioned lawyer who fakes his death and disappears with $90 million, only to resurface years later as competing forces close in. A previous screenplay draft was written by Graham Moore; Rideback is aboard with producer Jonathan Eirich and executive producer Nick Reynolds, and Grisham will executive produce with David Gernert. The configuration signals a studio-backed package with both star participation and established producers attached, positioning the film to advance from development toward a production timetable once deals and the latest script are set.

Bateman moves to the film after recent directing and acting work in television and two earlier features; he earned industry recognition for his episodic directing and has continued to steer projects through Aggregate. Holland’s involvement extends beyond the lead role: his company, formed with Harry Holland and producer Will South, has been building a slate alongside acting commitments, reflecting a larger push into producing while maintaining franchise and auteur-driven work.

The Partner has lingered in development for years, including an iteration once set up elsewhere with filmmaker attachments, but the new package clarifies studio ownership and current team composition. With a best-selling IP, a director with recent prestige credentials, and a bankable lead who is also producing, the project appears structured to move through script and scheduling steps that typically precede a greenlight on a legal thriller of this scale.
