Jeremy Renner has escalated a dispute with filmmaker Yi Zhou, with his attorney sending a cease-and-desist letter demanding she stop what he calls false and defamatory claims about their interactions during and after work on her documentary project. The letter asserts there was a single brief consensual encounter in July and alleges Zhou later pressed Renner for a romantic relationship, sent explicit messages, and threatened to damage him publicly if he declined to promote her work.
Zhou has publicly accused Renner of misconduct, including sending unsolicited explicit images, yelling at her while intoxicated, and threatening to report her to immigration authorities. She has posted screenshots and lengthy statements on Instagram and says she issued her own cease-and-desist letters to Renner in response to what she describes as harassment and reputational harm. In a statement carried by entertainment outlets, Renner’s lawyer called her allegations “false, outrageous, and highly defamatory,” while reiterating his account of one consensual encounter and denying any threats or continued advances.
The dispute stems from a professional collaboration that Zhou says grew into a personal relationship in mid-2025. She claims the first physical interaction was not consensual, though she describes later encounters as consensual, and she argues that speaking out was meant to set boundaries and correct misinformation about her project and their contact. Renner’s camp counters that he made clear in August he did not want a sexual relationship, and that any suggestion he promoted or agreed to promote her work under pressure is inaccurate.
Neither side has announced civil litigation, and law enforcement involvement has not been indicated. The back-and-forth has unfolded largely through media statements and Zhou’s social posts, where she has shared images of letters and messages she says support her account. Renner’s team maintains that her materials are misleading and that continued publication of what they call fabricated claims could lead to legal action.
