BAFTAs Upend Oscar Acting Races With Chalamet Loss, Penn and Mosaku Wins

With SAG voting closing Feb. 27 and the Oscars set for March 15, BAFTA’s acting surprises reshape the final stretch.

The BAFTA Film Awards sent a jolt through the Oscar conversation Sunday night, handing Timothée Chalamet a high-profile loss in leading actor while vaulting Sean Penn and Wunmi Mosaku into tighter supporting races less than three weeks before the Academy Awards.

Robert Aramayo won leading actor for I Swear, beating nominees that included Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan, after a season in which Chalamet’s campaign for Marty Supreme had looked strong in multiple precursor stops. The result underlined a recurring BAFTA pattern: British voters sometimes consolidate behind a performance that feels closer to home, while the Academy’s final tally can follow different industry currents.

The BAFTAs also crowned Penn as supporting actor for One Battle After Another, part of a six-award haul that included best film and directing for Paul Thomas Anderson. Penn’s win arrived after other major ceremonies spread trophies across the category, leaving Oscar handicappers to reassess how much late momentum still matters in a season with compressed voting windows.

Mosaku’s supporting actress win for Sinners carried similar weight. The film entered the night as an awards heavyweight and remains the Oscar nomination leader with 16 nods, yet its acting prizes have bounced between contenders across televised precursors. BAFTA voters breaking for Mosaku gave the race a new data point, while keeping the category unsettled heading into the Screen Actors Guild Awards on March 1, a voting body that often overlaps with the Academy’s acting branch.

The Oscars take place March 15 in Los Angeles, leaving campaigns little time to recalibrate after BAFTA’s curveballs.
