Taylor Sheridan Returns to Feature Films With Two New Scripts

The "Yellowstone" creator's first new feature projects in five years come from scripts he helped develop years before his television empire took off.

Taylor Sheridan is stepping back into feature filmmaking after a five-year absence, acquiring two original scripts through a new partnership between his Bosque Ranch Productions, David Glasser’s 101 Studios, and producer Andrew Lauren, best known for his work on “The Brutalist.” The deal marks Sheridan’s first new film projects since 2021’s “Those Who Wish Me Dead” and “Without Remorse,” as the creator of the “Yellowstone” universe expands beyond the television empire that has defined the past decade of his career.

The two projects, titled “Visalia” and “Capture the Flag,” originated with Lauren years before Sheridan’s rise to prominence as a showrunner. Lauren developed the concepts and brought on multiple writers over time, including Sheridan, who worked on early drafts before “Yellowstone” transformed him into one of the industry’s most in-demand creators.

“Visalia,” previously known as “Mojito,” follows a young Cuban woman who flees to the United States only to find herself pulled back into a homeland reshaped by political upheaval. “Capture the Flag” centers on a NASA engineer drawn into a race to build a reusable lunar spacecraft after a tech billionaire offers him the resources to make it happen, testing his ethics along the way.

Lauren said in a statement that the ideas took shape long before Sheridan’s career reached its current scale, adding that watching the writer’s continued investment in the material now feels meaningful. Sheridan will take a hands-on role in shaping both scripts going forward, according to the companies behind the deal.

The acquisition comes as Sheridan’s relationship with Paramount shifts. His film agreement with the studio lapsed in March, though his television deal continues through 2028 ahead of a larger move to NBCUniversal. He remains busy on the small screen, with Paramount+ continuing to carry “Landman,” “Lioness,” “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown” and “The Madison.”

On the feature side, Warner Bros.’ action thriller “F.A.S.T.,” starring Brandon Sklenar and built from a script Sheridan wrote more than a decade ago, is scheduled for an April 2027 release, while he is also co-writing Paramount’s live-action “Call of Duty” adaptation with director Peter Berg for 2028.

Lauren has built a career largely in independent film, with credits including “The Squid and the Whale,” “The Spectacular Now” and “Vox Lux,” alongside his producing role on the Oscar-winning “Brutalist.” He is also executive producing Tom McCarthy’s upcoming dramedy “The Statement,” starring Paul Rudd, Tatiana Maslany and Paul Giamatti.
