Tom Holland Says He “Hated” a Test-Audience Cut of New Spider-Man Film

As the film heads toward one of the year's biggest openings, Holland describes a scrapped edit built entirely from test-audience notes.

Tom Holland says an early cut of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” almost sank the film he and his co-stars now call one of the best entries in the franchise. Speaking to Quotable ahead of the movie’s Friday release, the actor described watching a test-audience-driven edit that left him, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon cold. Editors had built the cut around notes gathered from random screening attendees, he said, and the result missed the mark completely.

Holland recalled the reaction bluntly: the cast watched the reshaped version and rejected it outright, even though it delivered exactly what test viewers had asked for. He said the finished product satisfied audience requests on paper but abandoned what the filmmakers set out to make. The team scrapped that approach and returned to a version closer to director Destin Daniel Cretton’s original instincts, according to Holland.

The disclosure lands as the fourth Holland-led Spider-Man film heads into what analysts expect to be one of the largest openings in box office history. Rotten Tomatoes places the movie in the low-to-mid 90s among critics, matching or exceeding the scores earned by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the character’s earlier solo outings.

Domestic tracking has swung sharply upward in release week, with studio estimates near $195 million and independent forecasters projecting figures as high as $280 million to $300 million from roughly 4,300 North American theaters. Worldwide, some trackers now peg the opening at $465 million, which would rank as Sony’s second-biggest global debut behind “No Way Home.”

Holland’s account fits a familiar pattern inside major franchise filmmaking, where studios often test multiple cuts against focus groups before locking a theatrical version. Marvel Studios has made similar late-stage adjustments on other releases, including trims made to “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” after test screenings. Directors have occasionally clashed with that process; “The Marvels” filmmaker Nia DaCosta previously said her finished film diverged from what she intended.

For “Brand New Day,” Holland credited the reversal to lessons learned during the scrapped cut, saying the experience showed how dramatically a film can shift in the editing room before reaching theaters.
