The actress revealed she has been tapped to write, direct and star in the sequel to Harmony Korine’s 2012 cult film, sharing that the offer came after producers saw an early cut of her upcoming directorial debut. “The producers watched ‘Color Your Hurt,’ which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it,” Thorne told Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “And they loved it,” she added, confirming she now holds writing and directing duties on the project.
Thorne was previously set to star in the film alongside Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin and True Whitaker, though it remains unclear whether that cast will carry over now that she has stepped behind the camera. The sequel, originally titled “Spring Breakers: Salvation Mountain,” had been attached to director Matthew Bright, whose most recent screen credit dates back to 2002. Korine himself has said he has no interest in a follow-up and sees no need for one.
Thorne, who previously directed several music videos and earned two Adult Video News Award nominations for her 2020 short “Her & Him,” described the tone of her sequel as chaotic and high-energy, though she declined to share plot specifics. Asked whether any of the original cast — James Franco, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens and Rachel Korine — might return, she demurred, saying only that audiences looking for a good time at the theater would find one.
The original “Spring Breakers” followed a group of college students whose spring break plans spiral into crime and chaos. Released through A24, it grossed $31.7 million on a $5 million budget. Thorne has drawn a connection between herself and the original film’s stars, noting that she, Miley Cyrus, Zendaya and Selena Gomez all emerged from Disney Channel roots and faced similar scrutiny during that period of their careers. No release date or additional casting has been announced.
