Bill Maher revealed this week that Ben Affleck has turned down every invitation to return to “Real Time” since a combative 2014 exchange about Islam, a rift the host says still hasn’t healed despite repeated attempts to patch things up. Speaking on the August 17 episode of his “Club Random” podcast, Maher told guest Max Amini that he asks Affleck back every year and gets nowhere.
The falling out traces to an October 2014 taping when Affleck, then promoting “Gone Girl,” pushed back hard against Maher and author Sam Harris over comments the pair made about Islam and its followers. Maher had argued that the religion functions like organized crime, punishing dissent with violence, while Harris dismissed the concept of Islamophobia as overstated. Affleck called their framing racist and rooted in stereotype, pointing out that the overwhelming majority of Muslims want nothing more than ordinary lives, and visibly bristled as the segment wore on.
Maher said the episode remains the one moment from his decades on air that strangers bring up most often, calling it emotionally charged television rather than his proudest work. He noted that Harris eventually reconciled with Affleck privately, a peace he said he has never been offered himself. Still, Maher left the door open, suggesting a one-on-one conversation after twelve years might finally bridge the gap.
Affleck addressed the clash himself in a 2017 interview, saying his reaction stemmed from a belief that no one should be judged by race or religion, a principle he called central to liberal thought. He has not commented publicly on Maher’s latest remarks, and representatives for the actor did not respond to requests for comment from multiple outlets this week.
Affleck’s October 2014 appearance remains his only visit to the HBO program, which Maher has hosted since 2003 and built around unscripted political debate. The Maher-Affleck exchange has endured as one of the most replayed moments in the show’s history.
