Allison Janney’s reaction told the story before she said a word. Called to the stage Monday night for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, her win for Netflix’s “The Diplomat” pushed her career total to eight acting Emmys, tying Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the most ever won by a performer.
Janney told the crowd she hadn’t expected to win the category and described herself as stunned and deeply thankful. She thanked the Television Academy’s voters before turning to “The Diplomat” showrunner Debora Cahn, praising her scripts as the kind of material actors relish sinking their teeth into.
She went on to credit the series’ director and executive producer Janice Williams, then singled out co-star Keri Russell, calling her the most impressive woman she knew and crediting her with setting the tone for the cast every day on set. She closed by thanking Rufus Sewell and the rest of the ensemble, calling the entire cast wonderful.
The win came in a crowded field built largely around HBO Max’s “The Pitt,” which placed four nominees in the category through Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Katherine LaNasa and Sepideh Moafi. Julianne Nicholson of “Paradise” and Karolina Wydra of “Pluribus” rounded out the competition, but none proved a match for Janney’s turn on the Netflix diplomatic thriller, now in its third season. “The Diplomat” collected ten Emmy nominations overall this year, including Outstanding Drama Series and nods for both Russell and Sewell in the lead acting categories.
Janney’s path to eight wins stretches back a quarter century. Four came from her run on “The West Wing,” where she won as a supporting actress in 2000 and 2001 before moving into the lead actress category for wins in 2002 and 2004.
Two more arrived for her comedic work on “Mom,” and a seventh came as a guest actress on “Masters of Sex” in 2014. With sixteen career nominations behind her, Janney’s latest win places her name permanently alongside two of television’s most decorated performers, a distinction she treated Monday night less as a milestone to claim than a surprise to absorb.
