Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “The Dark Gets In,” a supernatural thriller from British filmmaker Sean Hogan, ahead of its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Beyond Fest on October 2.
The story follows a documentary crew investigating a young girl’s disappearance. The case drags the filmmakers into events far darker and stranger than they anticipated. Hogan, who also wrote the screenplay, builds on the public appetite for true crime documentaries before steering the narrative into supernatural territory.
The concept sat with Hogan for years. He says it found its shape only when he settled on the true crime mockumentary format. He wanted the film to feel real and disturbing at first, then reveal something more horrifying than the stories such programs usually tell. He describes the outcome as “a mixture of tragedy and tension and slow-burning dread.”
Producer Evrim Ersoy, whose credits include “In a Cold Vein,” previously worked with Hogan on “To Fire You Come At Last,” a 2023 folk horror film modeled on 1970s British supernatural television. That title debuted at South Korea’s Bifan before its UK premiere at FrightFest. Ersoy calls a second collaboration a natural step and hopes the new film frightens audiences worldwide.
Hogan’s feature credits include “The Devil’s Business” and “The Borderlands,” along with the documentary “Future Shock! The Story of 2000AD.” He has also published novels.
The film joins a Blue Finch slate that includes “Kick On,” a Toronto Midnight Madness title, and “Flapjax,” a sci-fi horror-comedy selected for Fantastic Fest. The slate also holds “Misson,” a BBC Film and Screen Scotland-backed project starring George MacKay.
Beyond Fest runs September 23 to October 6 and lists 81 features. The 91-minute film screens at 7 p.m. Pacific at the MUBI Theatre at Los Feliz 3, a venue where the festival offers free admission. Hogan will take questions afterward.
