Holland Taylor Says Low Pay Drove Her Out of “Two and a Half Men” Contract

The Emmy winner says CBS producers could not afford a raise, so she traded steady work for the right to pick her guest spots.

Holland Taylor says she walked away from her contract on “Two and a Half Men” because six years and four Emmy nominations never earned her a raise. Taylor, 83, played Evelyn Harper, the domineering mother of Charlie and Alan Harper, on the CBS sitcom. She laid out her reasoning on the October 21 episode of the “Alchemy with Anthony Mason” podcast. When her six-year deal expired, she told producers she no longer wanted to work under contract, though she would drop in for guest appearances if they wanted her.

The offer surprised the show’s team, Taylor said. Actors typically gain leverage when a contract ends, and executives assumed she was angling for a bigger paycheck. She says she told them she did not want more money. She wanted freedom. Producers replied that they could not afford to pay her more, and she accepted that.

Her pay had stagnated, she said. By her account, the show paid her roughly what she had earned on a series about eight years earlier, and the nominations changed nothing. She said she loved much of the experience but described the production as lacking in courtesies, adding that she had, after all, played the stars’ mother.

Taylor contrasted her situation with her co-stars’. She said Jon Cryer, who played Alan, roughly quadrupled his salary. Charlie Sheen, at the height of the show’s success, reportedly earned $1.8 million per episode, among the highest sums in sitcom history.

The new arrangement gave Taylor control of her calendar. She says she turned down guest requests that did not suit her schedule and accepted the ones she wanted. Evelyn kept appearing in the show’s later seasons, though far less often than in the early years.

The account comes from Taylor alone. Producers and the network have not offered a public response in the coverage reviewed. Television pay is rarely disclosed, which makes her claims difficult to check against what her co-stars or the studio actually earned. Taylor’s career gave her leverage few supporting players enjoy. She won an Emmy in 1999 for “The Practice” before Evelyn Harper made her a fixture on one of television’s most-watched comedies.
