Lionsgate used its CinemaCon 2025 presentation to confirm that a fifth John Wick film is now in early development, with Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves attached. Yet the director admits the plot remains unresolved, saying the team is still asking, “Is it going to be satisfying?” before committing to cameras. Speaking four days ago, Stahelski explained, “We’re still working on it. It’s all about time for us”.
The dilemma stems from Chapter 4’s ambiguous finale. Stahelski told interviewers he and screenwriter Mike Finch “haven’t quite got it all down,” though early drafts explore influences from classic Chinese and Middle-Eastern cinema. A separate analysis argues that an unused alternate ending to Chapter 4 may provide the needed narrative bridge for a sequel.
Reeves has signalled enthusiasm tempered by age, joking that his “heart” wants another outing but his knees are less certain after a decade of stunt-heavy shoots. Long-time producer Basil Iwanyk echoed that caution last month, noting the team prefers to “let the creative rest” before returning to Wick’s world.
Meanwhile, franchise activity continues. Lionsgate hopes the spin-off, alongside the Caine-centred project teased last year, keeps the brand visible while the core sequel gestates.
For now, Stahelski says the priority is a script that “earns the right” to bring John back. Studio optimism and audience demand are high, but the assassin’s next move will wait until filmmaker and star agree that the story’s emotional logic is bullet-proof.
