Hideo Kojima has recently declared that the newly announced film adaptation of Death Stranding is not going for the blockbuster format and that instead, it will be a more subdued film with a more artistic feel to it.
Not long after officially announcing Death Stranding 2 during the Game Awards last week, the creator of Metal Gear Solid revealed that he had reached an agreement with Barbarian producer Alex Lebovici to take Sam Porter Bridges’ adventure to the big screen.
“I’ve had video calls with a lot of people in Hollywood every week since last year, and not just for Death Stranding. I’ve received a lot of offers, but my intention from the beginning has never been to make a blockbuster. Alex Lebovici of Hammerstone Studios shared my vision on that.” Kojima said.
“There were a lot of proposals to make a large-scale movie, with famous actors and flashy explosions, but what’s the point of explosions in Death Stranding? Making money is also not something I’m interested in at all, my goal is something more artistic, and the only person who offered me to make a movie like that was Alex Lebovici, which makes me think he’s a pretty unusual guy.”
Regarding whether the film would adapt the entire game or if all the characters would be featured in it Kojima has made it clear that he’s not entirely sure yet.
“We haven’t quite decided that. The failure of game adaptations a while back has led to a lot of movies being made for gamers. That’s why they have the same look as a game. I don’t want the Death Stranding movie to be that. Instead, I’m taking the approach of changing and evolving the world of Death Stranding in a way that suits a movie well.”
“I made Death Stranding to be a game, and games are games. There’s no real need to turn them into movies. So, in a way, the Death Stranding movie is taking a direction that no one has ever taken before with a game adaptation. I think what I need to do is something that inspires people watching it to become creators ten or twenty years from now.”
