In remarks reported by Deadline, the actor argued the films should not have retired legacy heroes so quickly, saying he would have kept Han Solo and Luke Skywalker in play rather than moving them off the board early.
He also criticized the rapid power curve for newcomers, suggesting the story made new characters feel “overpowered” without the earned progression that defined earlier eras, and he pushed back on isolating Luke as a recluse, quipping that he wouldn’t have left the Jedi “on a rock.”
Boyega’s comments arrive after years of public reflection on his experience as Finn and the reaction to his casting. In a March interview highlighted by Variety, he described the franchise’s long-standing whiteness and the backlash faced by Black leads as a barrier to meaningful inclusion, framing some fan responses as resistant to change. He has previously said he confronted the studio about how characters of color were used in marketing relative to their arcs on screen.
The Supercon remarks also revive questions about how the sequel era balanced nostalgia with new storytelling.
