Sydney Sweeney Says Staying Silent on American Eagle Jeans Furor “Widened the Divide”

After months of controversy over American Eagle’s “Great Jeans” campaign, the Euphoria star says her silence worsened the fallout and stresses she does not back the racial politics some critics read into the advert.

Sydney Sweeney has admitted that staying quiet during the uproar over her American Eagle “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” campaign made the controversy worse, saying her silence “widened the divide” around an advert that became a flashpoint in the US culture wars. Speaking in a new interview while promoting her latest projects, the actor stressed that she does not support any ideology people tried to attach to the spot and said she is “against hate and divisiveness in every form.”

The denim campaign, launched in July, showed the blond, blue-eyed star in American Eagle outfits with a slogan that played on “genes” and “jeans.” In one clip, text reading “Sydney Sweeney has great genes” is crossed out and replaced with “jeans.” Critics on social media and in op-eds accused the imagery and wordplay of echoing eugenics and white supremacist ideas, with some comparing the aesthetic to historic propaganda. Others dismissed the outrage as performative and argued that the advert functioned as a straightforward piece of denim marketing.

Sweeney says she initially stayed off social media and avoided statements because she felt public debate had grown “so divisive” that any comment might inflame it. She now concedes that withholding a response created space for people to project motives onto her. She explains that she did the campaign because she liked the brand and the product, adding that she “doesn’t support the views” some observers linked to the advert and would never endorse messages rooted in racial hierarchy.

American Eagle, which had already seen its stock rise after the campaign launch, eventually addressed the criticism in an Instagram statement stressing that the work “is and always was about the jeans” and celebrating how different customers wear them. After Donald Trump praised the spot as the “hottest ad out there” and claimed the jeans were “flying off the shelves,” the retailer’s shares briefly jumped more than 20 percent, reinforcing industry analysis that the controversy doubled as unpaid marketing.

The debate around Sweeney’s advert has fed ongoing scrutiny of her off-screen image, from a previous MAGA-themed family party to reports confirming her Republican voter registration, and framed her as an unwilling proxy in partisan fights over “woke” branding. She now says she hopes the new year shifts attention back to connection rather than division and insists that disputes over advertising will not change her focus on acting, with awards chatter building for the boxing biopic Christy and a fresh promotional push for thriller The Housemaid.
