Tracy Reiner, the eldest daughter of filmmaker Rob Reiner, said she was “in shock” after learning her father and his wife, photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, were killed at their Los Angeles home. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
Los Angeles police said the couple, ages 78 and 68, were found dead Sunday afternoon at their Brentwood residence after officers responded to a call around 3:40 p.m. Police arrested their son, Nick Reiner, 32, later that night and booked him on suspicion of murder. Authorities initially listed a $4 million bail, then said he was being held without bail, with the case set for review by prosecutors on Tuesday. Police have not described a motive.
Tracy Reiner, whom Rob Reiner adopted during his marriage to Penny Marshall, has acted in films including “When Harry Met Sally…,” “A League of Their Own” and “Apollo 13.” Her brief comment came as investigators widened interviews across the family and sought to lock down evidence quickly. District Attorney Nathan Hochman said investigators push for search warrants early in a homicide case to protect evidence and limit later legal disputes over how it was collected.
The killings have triggered a flood of tributes that blend public remembrance with private grief. Reuters reported that Rob Reiner previously spoke candidly about his son’s long struggle with addiction and helped turn those experiences into the 2015 film “Being Charlie,” which Nick co-wrote. The Associated Press highlighted Michele Singer Reiner’s photography career and her work as a producer, plus the couple’s long-running advocacy on marriage equality through the American Foundation for Equal Rights. The family has asked for privacy while detectives and prosecutors move the case forward.
