Actors and filmmakers who worked with Rob Reiner are posting tributes after police said the director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed at their Brentwood home on Sunday, Dec. 14. Reiner was 78; Michele Singer Reiner was 68. Many messages have pointed back to “A Few Good Men,” the 1992 courtroom drama Reiner directed that earned four Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and that shaped the careers of several performers now mourning him in public.
Kevin Bacon, who played Capt. Jack Ross, recorded a video message Monday and opened by admitting he struggled to find the right words. He said Reiner “gave me a job” and recalled how strongly he wanted the part because he admired Reiner’s earlier work, calling out “This Is Spinal Tap” as a personal touchstone. Bacon credited Reiner with keeping the work focused while still making the set safe, pleasant and fun. He added an intimate memory: he ate lunch every day with Rob and Michele, joined often by his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, who was pregnant with their son at the time. Bacon ended by sending love to the Reiners’ children and close friends.
Demi Moore’s tribute leaned into how closely their lives connected beyond a single film. She wrote that their children grew up together and said she would hold on to shared memories from years that mixed work with friendship. Moore called Rob and Michele “wonderful parents” and wrote that they gave their time and energy to causes they believed could help others. Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis, friends and collaborators from Reiner’s orbit, urged people to keep attention on the family, saying their focus is supporting the Reiners’ children and immediate relatives as they grieve.
Authorities have released limited detail about the killings and have not described a motive. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said officers responded to the home at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday and later arrested the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, 32, booking him on suspicion of murder and holding him without bail. Police said detectives plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday for a filing decision. District Attorney Nathan Hochman said investigators move quickly to obtain search warrants early in a case to protect evidence and avoid legal challenges later.
