Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming open-world role-playing game inspired by JK Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, is currently in development by Avalanche Software. Despite being in development, the game has already become a hotly-discussed topic on the internet.
Many details about the game have been leaked, with its release date scheduled for February 10, 2023, and fans are eagerly awaiting additional information about the game.
However, the game’s controversy stems not from its content, but from its author, JK Rowling. In recent years, Rowling has made a series of statements and tweets that have been widely criticized for being transphobic. For example, she publicly supported Maya Forstater, a researcher who published an article that aimed to discredit the trans community.
As a result of these actions, Rowling’s reputation within the entertainment industry has been greatly affected, and she has been repeatedly accused of transphobia.
One platform that has taken action on this matter is ResetEra, a popular internet forum. The platform’s moderation team has stated that they will not tolerate any discussion of Hogwarts Legacy on their platform. They have banned any promotional posts related to the game, and have also issued a statement explaining their decision.
“After ongoing internal discussion, we began to outline the issues raised by Rowling and the game in question and each time, and as we discussed it all, we came back to the simple fact that Rowling is not only a bigot but is actively pushing, in her position as a rich and famous person, a legislation that harms trans people,” the statement reads.
Overall, while the game itself does not have any elements that would condemn it to censorship, the controversy surrounding its author JK Rowling has led to some platforms taking action in regards to discussion of the game.
The accusations against Rowling’s statements and tweets on gender identity has greatly affected her reputation within the entertainment industry and has led to some platforms like ResetEra taking a stance on the matter.
