Sink starts the clip by saying, “Hi, my name is Sadie Sink, and I play…” before the on-screen effect cuts her off mid-sentence. The tease follows months of speculation about which character she portrays in the film, with rumors centering on Jean Grey, the X-Men telepath long associated with the Phoenix Force. Other theories floated by fans include Spider-Girl, Firestar and Gwen Stacy.
Sink addressed the secrecy in an interview with Collider, comparing it to her years on “Stranger Things.” “I can’t even say who I’m playing, which is pretty extreme,” she said, adding that watching fan guesses multiply kept her entertained. “There was a new character every day, it seemed.” She said Marvel briefed her on the role early, telling her she had a clear sense of the part before production began, and she learned of her own casting in an unusual way, first spotting fan theories online before receiving the studio’s official call two days later.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has defended the blackout strategy, telling reporters he understands some viewers want to know everything ahead of time while others prefer to go in blind. He has promised the payoff justifies the wait, saying audiences will understand the reasoning once they see the finished film. Sink appeared at a Columbia Pictures photocall in New York as part of the rollout, confirming her presence in the cast while her character stayed unnamed.
Marketing observers have noted the studio’s approach mirrors past viral campaigns built around withheld details, turning speculation itself into free publicity. Sink has called the process “torture” at times but has stuck to the script.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, opens in theaters July 31, when Sink’s identity will finally be confirmed on screen.
