Casey Bloys signed a new multiyear contract to run content for HBO Max and Paramount+, locking in the HBO veteran hours after Skydance named him co-chair and chief content officer of its direct-to-consumer division.
The agreement replaces a deal that was set to expire at the end of 2027. Terms were not disclosed. Bloys will oversee original programming, strategy, operations, communications and performance across both streaming platforms once Paramount’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery closes Tuesday and the combined company becomes Skydance.
The choice carried weight. Skydance CEO David Ellison picked Bloys over Paramount’s streaming chair Cindy Holland, according to Deadline, in one of the toughest calls he faced while assembling the new executive suite. Holland, who has announced her exit, said Ellison was putting stability at HBO first.
Bloys brings his core HBO team with him: drama chief Francesca Orsi, comedy chief Amy Gravitt, HBO Max originals head Sarah Aubrey and communications chief Jeff Cusson. Orsi, Gravitt and Cusson have each spent at least 20 years at the network. Bloys is expected to evaluate Holland’s Paramount+ programming team before making personnel decisions.
He joined HBO in 2004 as a comedy executive, became president of programming in 2016, added HBO Max originals in 2020 and took the title of chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content in 2022.
Bloys will work alongside JB Perrette, the former Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief, who becomes co-chair and chief business officer of Skydance TV and the direct-to-consumer unit. George Cheeks co-chairs Skydance TV as chief content officer. Mark Thompson will run CNN, and Bari Weiss will run CBS News. Ellison called the combined company a “creative-first home” in announcing the team.
Subscribers still lack answers. Ellison said in March that Paramount+ and HBO Max would merge into one platform while the HBO brand stays separate. Bloys declined last week to say if the services would be bundled or merged, though he called a package like HBO Max’s Disney bundle a move that would make sense. Skydance has not announced a name, price or timeline for either app.
