Universal’s Snoop Dogg biopic has found its Tupac Shakur, with “Panic” actor Camron Jones cast to play the rapper opposite Jonathan Daviss in the untitled film, titled “Snoop.”
Jones, known for his role as Bishop in the Amazon Prime young adult drama “Panic,” joins a cast that already includes Daviss, the “Outer Banks” star portraying Snoop Dogg, and Myles Bullock as Dr. Dre, the producer who signed Snoop and helped shape his 1993 debut album “Doggystyle” into a chart-topping hit. Lauren London, known for “ATL” and “Without Remorse,” rounds out the recent additions as Beverly Tate, Snoop’s late mother, who worked as a church choir director and gave her son the childhood nickname that inspired his stage name.
Craig Brewer, the director behind “Hustle & Flow” and “Dolemite Is All You Need,” is directing from a rewrite of a script originally penned by Joe Robert Cole, co-writer of both “Black Panther” films. Snoop Dogg is producing alongside Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment, Allan Mandelbaum and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. Universal describes the project as the definitive account of the rapper’s rise from Long Beach, California, to his standing as one of hip-hop’s most recognizable entrepreneurs and cultural figures. The studio has set an August 6, 2027 theatrical release.
Casting Tupac carries particular weight given his history with Snoop. The two were labelmates at Death Row Records during the label’s mid-1990s dominance, collaborating on tracks including “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” before Shakur’s death in 1996. Snoop later inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. The film marks the first project to emerge from Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios, a banner Snoop launched after acquiring the Death Row Records name and catalogue.
The biopic has been building its ensemble steadily in recent weeks, following Daviss’s casting as the lead. Production has not yet announced a start date, and additional roles are expected to be filled as the film moves toward its 2027 release.
