Gillian Anderson Explains Why She Told Fans Not to Sit in Her Front Row

The Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? star says the intimacy of Soho Place Theatre makes repeat front-row attendees hard to ignore.

Gillian Anderson has addressed a viral video of her telling fans not to sit in the front row of her West End show, saying the closeness of the theater makes repeat attendees hard to ignore.

The clip, filmed outside London’s Soho Place Theatre after a performance of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, was posted just after midnight on Sunday, UK time. Anderson, 58, tells a group of women, who stay off camera, that they cannot sit in the front row. She says it is too distracting. “You can’t come 20 times and sit in the front row, it’ll drive me mad,” she adds. The fans respond with “I know” and “I’m sorry.”

The video has passed 4 million views on TikTok alone and drew a heated reaction. The user who shared it claimed the women had booked eight performances, a figure no one has independently confirmed.

Anderson answered on X. She said she and her cast are thrilled to be doing the play, but that in so intimate a venue, performers can see everyone in the front row. Sometimes, she wrote, that can be “a tad distracting.” She ended on a conciliatory note, thanking audiences and telling everyone to carry on with the show. One report says she also asked people not to pile on the fans.

Online opinion split. Some commenters sided with Anderson, arguing that an actor mid-scene cannot ignore a face she keeps recognizing, and that the disruption affects the whole house. One wrote that a poor performance hurts every ticket holder. Others called her approach harsh and said the fans meant no harm, with one user describing the confrontation as “weird.”

The production stars Anderson opposite Billy Crudup in Edward Albee’s play, produced by Sonia Friedman Productions. The Soho Place Theatre seats a small audience close to the stage, which makes the front row unusually exposed. Anderson has dealt with devoted followers since her days on The X-Files.

Theaters have long struggled with the etiquette of repeat attendance. Nothing prevents a fan from buying multiple tickets, and the venue has not announced any change to its seating policy. It remains unclear if the fans in the video will change their habits.
