Gabriel Basso, the lead of Netflix’s “The Night Agent,” has signed on as a series regular in Apple TV’s true-crime thriller “Guilty Creatures,” Deadline reported Tuesday. The casting comes just after “The Night Agent” wrapped production on its fourth and final season. Apple has not said which character Basso will play.
Basso joins Lewis Pullman and Maddie Hasson, both previously announced as regulars. Mary-Louise Parker has a recurring role. Julia Garner stars and executive produces, and entertainment outlets report she will play one half of the central couple opposite Pullman.
The series adapts Mikita Brottman’s book “Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida.” Apple’s description centers on two young, devout lovers whose adulterous affair ends in murder, then follows the 18 years they spend living with what they did. The story unfolds in the Florida Panhandle.
Craig Gillespie, who directed “I, Tonya,” directs and executive produces. Stuart Zicherman, whose résumé includes “The Shrink Next Door” and “The Americans,” serves as showrunner. Sarah DeLappe, a writer on “The Regime” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” wrote the adaptation. Tomorrow Studios produces for Apple, which ordered the project in July. No premiere date exists yet.
The move sends two Netflix thriller leads to the same Apple series. Garner won three Emmys for playing Ruth Langmore on “Ozark” and also stars in Netflix’s FTX drama “The Altruists.” Basso’s Peter Sutherland anchored a series whose first season reached the streamer’s list of most popular English-language shows.
Basso has kept busy off the small screen. He appears opposite Margaret Qualley in Prime Video’s “Love of Your Life” and wrote, directed and starred in the thriller “Iconoclast.” His film credits also include “A House of Dynamite” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” where he played J.D. Vance. Neither Basso nor Apple has commented publicly on his role, so questions remain about how his character fits into a story built around two lovers and the crime that binds them.
