Bungie Prepares to Lift the Veil on Delayed Destiny 2: The Final Shape Next Week

Long-awaited expansion to get gameplay preview ahead of June 4 release following delays and reported turmoil

After months of uncertainties and reported behind-the-scenes turbulence, Bungie is finally pulling back the curtain on the long-awaited Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion with a gameplay preview stream scheduled for next Tuesday, April 9th.

The half-hour developer walkthrough promises to offer the first substantial look at the culminating chapter in the longrunning Light and Darkness saga since The Final Shape’s surprise delay to June 4th, 2024 back in November. Originally slated to launch in late February, Bungie announced they were pushing the expansion to “take the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision.”

At the time, Bungie characterized the ambitious Final Shape as the payoff to “ten years of Destiny storytelling” meant to provide an iconic, “treasured” endcap fans would remember for years. However, multiple reports have since emerged alleging that crunch and overly optimistic expectations precipitated the delay amid larger company struggles.

According to accounts from late 2023, Bungie faced threats to its independence as a Sony subsidiary due to sluggish revenue and player retention issues for Destiny 2. Studio leadership was reported to have instituted widescale layoffs and cost-cutting plans under increasing pressure to meet strict performance goals set by PlayStation’s parent company.

Now almost six months removed from the original February launch target, it appears Bungie is ready to re-introduce The Final Shape to the world and ignite hype among Destiny’s passionate community. While concrete details remain scarce, the studio promises the April 9th stream at 9:30am PT will provide an “update on what the team has been building” ahead of the expansion’s expected summer arrival.

The showcase will be followed immediately by the “worldwide premiere” of the launch trailer for the free “Into the Light” content update scheduled for mid-April. This smaller-scale drop is likely intended to keep Guardians engaged and stave off further potential rises while the avidly awaited Final Shape nears its new June starting line.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

With Sony’s ownership adding an extra layer of intrigue, all eyes will be keenly observing how Bungie’s next unveiling aligns with the ambitious “bigger and bolder” vision originally promised for Destiny’s narrative climax. In the wake of reported crunch and layoffs, the Final Shape now shoulders heightened expectations as a potential make-or-break moment for Bungie’s independent future and the Destiny franchise’s longevity overall.

While it remains to be seen if the delayed expansion can live up to a full decade of storytelling buildups, next week’s extended first look should finally illuminate whether The Final Shape is still on track to deliver the Destiny sendoff fans have dreamt about since the beginning. For Bungie, the upcoming gameplay demo represents a pivotal opportunity to rekindle excitement and erase any doubts after a tumultuous year.
