Mortal Kombat 2 Slated to Pummel Theaters in Late 2025

The highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat movie sequel will test its might in theaters and IMAX on October 24, 2025, pulling no punches with an ensemble cast.

Fans of the legendary fighting franchise can start the 10-count, as Mortal Kombat 2 has locked in an October 24, 2025 theatrical release date according to Warner Bros. The R-rated martial arts extravaganza will wage battle on the big screen and in IMAX theaters worldwide next fall.

The upcoming sequel continues the story from 2021’s hit reboot, which introduced a new original character named Cole Young alongside the iconic Mortal Kombat warriors. That film proved a box office smash, raking in $42 million domestically and $83 million globally despite a hybrid theatrical and streaming release.

New Line Cinema has reassembled the core creative team, with director Simon McQuoid once again calling the shots. Jeremy Slater, the scribe behind the acclaimed Marvel series Moon Knight, is penning the script.

While story details remain under wraps, the ensemble cast provides some intriguing hints at who may join the tournament. Newcomers include Karl Urban as wisecracking action star Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph in an undisclosed role.

They’ll join returning players Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung among others.

In a 2021 interview, McQuoid teased plans to incorporate fan favorite characters like Kitana should the first film perform well enough to justify a sequel.

“The reason [Johnny Cage] is not in this original film is he’s such a giant personality that he almost has his own gravitational field,” the director explained at the time. “The feeling was that he would throw it out of balance slightly.”

Mortal Kombat 2 aims to raise the stakes by upping the bone-crunching action and integrating even more marquee fighters from the classic games. Audiences can expect a bloodier, grander scale of martial arts mayhem when the sequel initiates its cinematic onslaught next year.

Todd Garner, James Wan, McQuoid, E. Bennett Walsh and Toby Emmerich are producing the highly-anticipated follow-up for New Line.
