The popular horror film “Smile” from 2020 is getting a sequel titled “Smile 2” set to be released in theaters on October 18th. Naomi Scott, known for her roles in movies like “Aladdin” and television shows like “Life in Pieces”, will star as the lead character Skye Riley. The sequel will follow Riley, now a global pop star, as she prepares for a world tour that takes a dark turn. Riley begins experiencing increasingly scary, unexplained events that escalate over time. With the pressures of fame also mounting, she must confront aspects of her past to regain control of her life.
Joining Scott in the cast are Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Nicholson, Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, and Dylan Gelula. The success of the original film, which became a surprise box office hit in 2020, enabled the sequel to have a larger budget and expanded cast. Director Parker Finn, who also helmed the first movie, expressed excitement about using “horror as metaphor” in unique ways and continuing to include frightening moments that feel realistic.
Like the original, “Smile 2” is expected to explore themes of psychological trauma and distress, but within the new setting of Riley’s music career.
