Nasreen Amini, an acclaimed Iranian singer-songwriter, has struggled for years under Iran’s restrictive laws that bar women from singing in public. A new documentary directed by her sister, Leila Amini, spotlights Nasreen’s fight to share her talent. Titled “A Sisters’ Tale,” the film premiered this week at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The documentary followed Nasreen as she rediscovered her passion for music after feeling pressure to stop performing and start a family. As Leila recounts, Nasreen confided that her “only achievement in life is being the mother of two kids.” Through intimate scenes, viewers see Nasreen grapple with clashes over her musical ambitions with her husband in a country where the law prohibits women from singing publicly.
Festival programmer Thom Powers praised Nasreen’s “beauty, power, and poetry” in her voice, saying it “reshapes the world in her own vision.” The film documents Nasreen’s transformation “from a vulnerable homemaker to a woman in control of her own destiny” as she rediscovers her singing ability and drive to perform. However, navigating marital tensions, parental duties, and resistance presented constant obstacles to fulfilling her artistic dreams.
Global distributor Rise and Shine World Sales acquired rights to the film ahead of its premiere, seeing its message of “Women united in Song” as universally resonant. Powers called Nasreen’s journey “a wonderful metaphor for the strive for freedom of Iran’s women.” Through gripping scenes of Nasreen’s highs and lows with candid access, “A Sisters’ Tale” brings powerful awareness of one woman’s fight against societal oppression to reclaim her voice through music.
