Obsidian Entertainment is a highly acclaimed developer of RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas and KOTOR. Developers have a slew of hits to their credit, and are working on a bunch of titles in the meantime, with Avowed perhaps the most exciting.
But today they released another game, which maybe at first glance doesn’t seem so special (not counting the graphic style).
Pentiment, for it is referred to, receives very high ratings and is described as “a real treat for fans of well-written RPGs.”
At Metacritic, however, a game currently holds an average of 86/100 on the Xbox Series X version and 87/100 on PC. the title has even earned a pair of the top marks that can be given.
IGN, WedllPlayed or Gfinity have given the game tens themselves, praising it highly. Since the launch title appeared on Xbox Game Pass it’s a shame to skip it, right?
Particularly if the love of successful RPGs plays in our hearts. Pentiment has been praised first and foremost for its great script that makes you think.
Not only will it appeal to fans of history and the Middle Ages, but also those in love with philosophy, morals and all who simply like good stories. Oh, and we can’t forget the strong emphasis on criminal plots.
The production of Obsidian is primarily based on conversations and learning more threads of investigation. The players take on the role of a medieval painter who gets into the middle of an intrigue full of murders, puzzles and numerous seemingly unrelated threads.
Remarkably, however, and even the lowest ratings (such as the one given by GameSpot) laud the game’s attention to detail and quite a few engaging passages.
The title’s biggest issue, though, is quite little gameplay… in-game. It is worth remembering that this is a sort of narrative experiment putting precisely the story above the gameplay. Fans of Disco Elysium and this type of production just fine.
