Authorities recently prohibited the sale of Final Fantasy 16 when Square Enix, the game’s developer, declined to make modifications to the content to cater to the Saudi market. The statements provided by officials are vague, but it is not challenging to discern their intended meaning.

Hattan Tawili, a video game supervisor in Saudi Arabia, expressed his disappointment, stating, “After all our failed attempts over the past eight months, one of the most significant and highly anticipated games of the year is set to be banned due to its complete refusal to modify its content to align with its region.
The company is well aware of the situation, but they included a lot of controversial content in the game without justification and refuse to make changes.”
The local public media authority has officially confirmed the ban on the game. In February, according to the VGC portal, three authors from the Saudi website TrueGaming posted tweets that were likely related to Final Fantasy 16 and its potential LGBTQ+ themes.
LGBTQ+ Rights in Saudi Arabia
In Saudi Arabia, homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment, corporal punishment, and even the death penalty. The LGBTQ+ community is not officially recognized and has no legal rights in the country.
This stems from the absence of a traditional penal code and the reliance on the interpretation of Sharia law for legal provisions.
