In a decisive move to uphold values of inclusivity and diversity, Nexus Mods, a popular platform for video game modding, recently removed a controversial mod from “Baldur’s Gate 3” known for its anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments. This action reflects Nexus Mods’ commitment to creating a welcoming and respectful community for all gamers.
On December 4th, a ban report was posted on the Nexus Mods forum, announcing the removal of the “Ser Aylin” mod. This mod, part of a larger anti-LGBTQ+ pack titled “No Alphabets,” was designed to alter the gender and sexual orientation of characters in “Baldur’s Gate 3.” The mod’s intention was not merely to explore gender-swap possibilities but to erase and replace LGBTQ+ content in the game.
The “Ser Aylin” mod involved changing the character Dame Aylin, an immortal demigoddess, into a male version with over 850 AI-altered voice lines. This change aimed to transform her homosexual relationship with Isobel, a female character, into a heterosexual one. Similarly, another part of the modpack changed the character Sebastian from male to female, altering his gay relationship with a potential party member.
Targeting Trans Representation
Most egregiously, the modpack also targeted trans representation in the game. It altered the backstory of Nocturne, a trans woman character voiced by Abigail Thorn (known as Philosophy Tube on YouTube), turning her into a cisgender man. This included changing her model, voice, and adding a fictional diary entry about detransitioning.
Nexus Mods’ swift action against this mod underlines their stance against any content that deliberately opposes inclusivity and diversity. The platform has a history of removing mods that discriminate or alter content to marginalize specific groups. Previously, Nexus Mods had removed mods from “Starfield” and “Marvel’s Spider-Man” that removed pronouns and pride flags, respectively.
A Broader Concern
The “No Alphabets” modpack and similar mods raise broader concerns about the use of modding to propagate discriminatory ideologies. While modding often enhances gaming experiences, it also has the potential to be misused to push bigoted narratives.
Nexus Mods’ response serves as a reminder of the responsibility platforms have in moderating content and maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment.
