Blizzard Entertainment has recently released its comprehensive end-of-year review for 2023, reflecting on a period marked by significant internal changes and external challenges.
This year has been pivotal for the company, not just in terms of game development but also in evolving its corporate culture, particularly in the realms of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I).
2023 has been a tumultuous year for Blizzard. The year began with the company severing its partnership with NetEase, consequently cutting off access to its titles for Chinese gamers. This move was one of the first indicators of the shifting dynamics within the company.
Adding to the complexity of the year, Blizzard’s parent company underwent a major leadership change. The timing of the end-of-year review, released just hours after this announcement, underscored the rapid evolution occurring within the organization.
A significant highlight of Blizzard’s review was the emphasis on enhancing internal education efforts and the appointment of a new DE&I officer, Pamela Burga. Mike Ybarra, Blizzard’s president, emphasized the importance of incorporating the company’s culture work into its core ethos, akin to the development of their games.

The review also touched upon the challenges faced by Blizzard, including the aftermath of losing its partnership with NetEase and the controversies surrounding reports of workplace harassment.
The transparency report, released earlier in June, revealed that the company had received 114 reports of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation in 2022, substantiating 31 of these cases.
Furthermore, the completion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King in late October, following months of legal hurdles, marked a major transition for the company. The end of the year will see another significant change with Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick stepping down.
Despite the challenges, Blizzard also celebrated milestones in its gaming portfolio. The company reported that players created over 1 billion characters across its flagship games, Diablo and World of Warcraft.
The enduring popularity of these games is further highlighted by the fact that 150,000 Battle.net accounts have been active for over 25 years.
In a commendable community effort, the World of Warcraft players raised $1.5 million for BlueCheck Ukraine, showcasing the power of gaming communities in supporting global causes.
