Reviving Classics: Capcom's Continued Journey with Resident Evil Remakes

Capcom has confirmed its intention to continue remaking classic Resident Evil games, riding on the success of its recent remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4. This announcement, made during a PlayStation partner awards event in Japan, has stirred excitement among fans, though Capcom remains tight-lipped about which title will be remade next.

Yasuhiro Anpo, the director of the Resident Evil 4 remake, expressed the company’s satisfaction with the reception of the recent remakes. He highlighted the value of reintroducing these beloved games to a modern audience, affirming Capcom’s commitment to preserving and revitalizing these classics.

Speculation on Future Remakes

With Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 already reimagined, speculation is rife about Capcom’s next project. A popular contender among fans is Resident Evil Code: Veronica, a Sega Dreamcast classic initially released in 2000.

Although it received a remaster for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a current-gen remake could attract a new generation of players on platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Other potential candidates include the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0, and possibly even the more action-oriented Resident Evil 5.

Anpo pointed out the unique advantage of remakes: the existence of a fanbase already familiar with the original games. This insight allows Capcom to tailor the remakes according to player feedback and expectations, a factor contributing to the warm reception of their previous remakes.

Technical Backbone: The RE Engine

In the same Q&A session, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer of the Resident Evil 4 remake, mentioned the benefits of using Capcom’s own RE Engine for these projects. This powerful engine has not only expedited development processes but also ensured a high-quality remake experience, indicating that Capcom plans to continue utilizing it for future remakes.

The Resident Evil 4 remake, launched in March, received critical acclaim, underscoring its success in meeting the high expectations of fans and critics alike. With the Resident Evil 3 remake released in April 2020 and the Resident Evil 2 remake in January 2019, the pattern suggests that fans might not have to wait long for the announcement of the next remake in this revered series.
