FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed action RPG, Elden Ring, is poised to embark on its final chapter with the highly anticipated ‘Shadow of the Erdtree’ DLC, set for release on June 21st. In a recent interview, the game’s creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, confirmed that this expansion will be the “first and last” piece of additional content for the title, marking the conclusion of the Elden Ring saga, at least for now.
Miyazaki, known for his meticulous approach to game design and storytelling, shed light on the decision to create a single, substantial DLC for Elden Ring. “Elden Ring emphasizes exploration and adventure in a big world,” he explained. “In order to provide such an experience, a vast and huge setting is inevitably needed. Therefore, instead of splitting it into several parts, it was better to simply make one big [expansion].”
The rationale behind this approach stems from Miyazaki’s belief that dividing the additional content into multiple smaller expansions could potentially diminish the game’s sense of freedom and adventure – core elements that have defined the Elden Ring experience.
While the ‘Shadow of the Erdtree’ DLC marks the end of the road for Elden Ring’s post-launch support, Miyazaki did not entirely rule out the possibility of a sequel. In a previous interview with IGN, he stated, “We don’t want to say this is the end of the Elden Ring saga for now. We didn’t want to flatten those possibilities or put a pin in them just at that time. We don’t have any current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don’t want to snuff out that possibility.”
This sentiment aligns with FromSoftware’s approach to its previous titles, such as the Dark Souls trilogy, where the door was left open for future iterations or continuations, even after the release of their respective DLCs.
The ‘Shadow of the Erdtree’ DLC promises to introduce a brand-new story, world, weapons, enemies, and additional RPG features, further expanding the already vast and richly detailed universe of Elden Ring. With Miyazaki’s track record of delivering exceptional narrative experiences and challenging gameplay, fans can expect an epic conclusion to the current storyline.
Elden Ring’s critical and commercial success has been nothing short of remarkable, garnering numerous Game of the Year awards and selling over 23 million copies since its initial release in February 2022. Its captivating blend of intricate world-building, punishing combat, and subtle storytelling has cemented its place as one of the most celebrated gaming experiences of recent times.
As the curtain falls on the Elden Ring saga (for now), gamers eagerly anticipate the unveiling of ‘Shadow of the Erdtree,’ a final masterpiece that promises to push the boundaries of the Soulsborne genre once more. Whether this expansion paves the way for a future sequel or stands as a definitive conclusion remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: FromSoftware’s commitment to crafting unforgettable gaming experiences remains unwavering.
