In a move that has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, Nintendo has officially confirmed plans to unveil the successor to its wildly popular Switch console within the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025. This long-awaited announcement comes directly from Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, who shared the news as part of the company’s recent financial results.

Furukawa’s statement reads: “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.”

While the revelation has ignited excitement among gamers worldwide, Furukawa was quick to temper expectations for an imminent unveiling. He clarified that the upcoming Nintendo Direct, scheduled for June, will focus solely on the Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, with no mention of the highly anticipated successor.

“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024,” Furukawa stated, “but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

This strategic move by Nintendo indicates a desire to provide a comprehensive look at the Switch’s upcoming software offerings while building anticipation for the next-generation console’s reveal later in the fiscal year.

The Switch, which launched in March 2017, has been a resounding success for Nintendo, selling over 122 million units worldwide as of March 2023. Its innovative hybrid design, allowing for seamless transitions between handheld and home console gaming, struck a chord with players seeking flexibility and convenience.

As the Switch approaches its seventh year on the market, speculation has been rife about its successor’s capabilities and potential release window. Industry insiders have suggested that the new console, tentatively dubbed the “Switch 2,” will maintain the hybrid form factor while boasting significant hardware upgrades, including a larger eight-inch LCD screen and magnetically attached Joy-Con controllers.

Nintendo’s decision to officially acknowledge the Switch successor’s impending reveal comes on the heels of numerous leaks and rumors circulating within the gaming community. Reports from reputable sources have indicated that the company has already demonstrated the console’s capabilities to developers, and that a 2025 launch is being targeted to ensure a robust software lineup at launch.

With the curtain soon to be lifted on Nintendo’s next gaming hardware, the industry and fans alike are eagerly anticipating further details. Will the Switch successor maintain the innovative spirit of its predecessor, or will Nintendo chart a bold new course in the ever-evolving gaming landscape?

As the countdown to the big reveal begins, one thing is certain: Nintendo’s upcoming announcements will undoubtedly shape the future of gaming for years to come.
