Star Wars fans received an early gift at this year’s D23 Expo with the first details of Jon Watts’ highly anticipated Disney+ original series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” Set to hit the streaming service this December 3rd, the show follows a group of four young adventurers who find themselves lost in the post-Return of the Jedi era.
Oscar nominee Jude Law lends his talents to the role of Jedi Master Jod Na Nawood, who aids the children in their quest to return home. Joining Watts at the helm is a roster of directorial talent including Jake Schreier, Lee Isaac Chung and the Daniels duo behind the critically acclaimed “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
Standing out among the youthful cast is Robert Timothy Smith’s character Neel, an elephantine Ortolan who is sure to capture viewers’ hearts à la Grogu from “The Mandalorian.”

As the franchise’s latest non-human addition, industry insiders predict Neel could drive new levels of merchandise sales just like Hasbro’s insanely popular “Baby Yoda” toys. “We wantSkeleton Crew to have wide appeal like The Mandalorian by introducing empathetic and endearing characters both old and new,” said executive producer Dave Filoni.
Filoni added that the series exemplifies the creative freedom enabled by the streaming platform. “Being able to tell more intimate coming-of-age stories within the larger Star Wars universe has been very rewarding,” Filoni continued. Showrunner Jon Watts echoed those sentiments, saying the show aims to blend galactic action with relatable human drama.
Skeleton Crew is the latest piece in the interconnected Star Wars puzzle unfolding exclusively on Disney+, stoking anticipation levels for when the series beams down this December.
