Actor Donald Glover hopes to bring more levity to the Star Wars franchise in his planned spinoff film focused on the character of Lando Calrissian. In a recent interview, Glover expressed his desire for the project to have a fun and comedic tone that balances the increasingly serious storylines seen in recent Star Wars productions. As a longtime fan of the series himself, Glover believes maintaining a sense of lighthearted enjoyment is important.
Glover first portrayed Lando in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. He has since taken a lead creative role in developing the Lando spinoff alongside his brother Stephen Glover. While originally planned as a television series, the project is now envisioned as a feature film. However, details around production timelines remain uncertain.
In his comments, Glover said he wants the movie “to be fun.” Referencing the often grave nature of plots centered around the Skywalker family, Glover stated Star Wars has “veered too far into somber territory.” As he sees it, “sometimes it’s way too serious.” To Glover, one of the best parts of Lando is that “he’s a scoundrel” with a roguish charm, thinking to himself “this war is whack” and just wanting “to make money” – sentiments anyone can relate to.
Glover also noted that serious real-world issues mean “it’s very hard to have fun right now.” However, he believes enjoyment and levity are an important part of the human experience that society risks lacking. With the Lando project, Glover aims to bring some of this balanced fun and lightheartedness back to the Star Wars franchise through the character.
While enthusiastic, Glover acknowledges moving forward will require the “right way to do it” and “time is precious.” Fans will have to wait for further announcements from Lucasfilm and Disney on an official production schedule and release date. But with Glover’s continued involvement and vision, the Lando film appears to remain a priority.
