Electronic Arts (EA) is developing a live-action movie based on its hit life simulation video game franchise The Sims. The project will see the popular game brought to the big screen through a collaboration between EA and LuckyChap Entertainment, known for the successful 2023 film Barbie. LuckyChap will produce the Sims film, with Kate Herron signed on to direct.
Herron is an experienced director known for her work on the Marvel series Loki and the Netflix show Sex Education. She will co-write the script alongside Briony Redman. Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, said the company is excited to work with LuckyChap to “bring the magic of The Sims to millions more fans.”
While plot details are still under wraps, EA Vice President Kate Gorman teased elements fans can expect. She noted the film will be “rooted” in The Sims universe. Iconic in-game aspects like Freezer Bunnies and pools without ladders may feature. Gorman said the goal is an “authentic Sims experience” that appeals to both long-time and new fans.
Since 2000, The Sims games have allowed players to create virtual characters and control their daily lives. With over 500 million players worldwide, it is one of the best-selling video game franchises ever. Known for its creativity tools, humor, and relatable scenarios, The Sims looks well-suited for a movie adaptation that could reach a wider audience.
LuckyChap’s track record, including the success of Barbie, suggests they have the skills to translate The Sims’ unique style to the big screen. However, casting and a release date have not been announced yet as the project is in early development. If successful, the collaboration between EA, LuckyChap and Herron could be the start of more video game movies based on popular franchises.
