Lady Gaga Unveils 'Harlequin' Album Ahead of 'Joker' Sequel Release

Pop star Lady Gaga is set to release a new album and appears in an upcoming film presenting audiences with a cross-genre entertainment experience. Gaga will debut “Harlequin,” a 13-track jazz-style album, on September 27 to accompany the movie “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Released two weeks before the film on October 4, the album features remakes of classic songs by Louis Armstrong and Judy Garland as well as Gaga’s original songs. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” directed by Todd Phillips, stars Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role from the 2019 Joker film alongside Gaga, who plays Harley Quinn.

In previewing “Harlequin,” Gaga shared a video on social media of her character defacing the Mona Lisa while singing an apparent new song titled “The Joker.” This gives fans a glimpse of the album’s themes relating to the film’s story and style. The album explores Gaga’s interest in jazz, a genre she worked with the late Tony Bennett on previously. Some describe the album’s format as reimagining classic songs in new musical styles. While this approach has sparked differing opinions, it aligns with reports the film takes on qualities of a musical.

Set two years after the first Joker film, the sequel explores the relationship between Arthur Fleck, aka The Joker, and Harley Quinn as patients at Arkham State Hospital. Early reviews from the Venice Film Festival were mixed on the film overall but acclaimed Gaga’s performance, suggesting she may receive Oscar consideration. The album release on September 27 precedes the movie’s theater release on October 4, similar to Prince’s 1989 album accompanying the Tim Burton Batman film, potentially signifying changing industry practices. Observers are curious how audiences will receive Gaga’s unique crossover project blending film and music.

In addition to “Harlequin,” Gaga revealed to Vogue magazine she recorded another pop album tentatively called “LG7,” set for release in February 2023. She noted being in a happier mental state now versus creating her previous album “Chromatica,” showing her growth personally and artistically. As anticipation builds for Gaga’s new album and role in the Joker sequel, the entertainment world watches to see how this ambitious multi-genre venture performs commercially and artistically.
