A new film version of Emily Brontë’s classic novel “Wuthering Heights” has sparked debate over its casting of the lead character Heathcliff. Director Emerald Fennell chose Jacob Elordi, a white actor, to portray Heathcliff in the upcoming movie. However, many argue this overlooks clues in the book suggesting Heathcliff had darker skin.
The production, scheduled to start filming in the UK next year, will see Margot Robbie star as Catherine Earnshaw. Fennell is handling writing, directing, and producing duties. But the casting of Elordi as Heathcliff has drawn significant criticism. Experts note Brontë described Heathcliff as having “dark-skinned” appearance and being found abandoned in Liverpool, a major slave port. This has led scholars to believe Heathcliff was possibly a person of color.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Michael Stewart of the Brontë Writing Centre said past adaptations have often featured white actors in the “more ambiguous ethnic” role of Heathcliff. However, he feels modern representations must consider responsibilities around accurately portraying characters. Dr. Claire O’Callaghan, editor of the Brontë Society journal, shared similar thoughts. She worries overlooking clues to Heathcliff’s background could diminish the complex issues explored in the novel.
Many have voiced displeasure on social media as well. A widely shared tweet argued the book depicts Heathcliff as dark-skinned and facing racism, making Elordi an odd choice. Film critics also questioned whether the production adequately researched the source material before casting decisions. Some expressed doubts that Elordi and Robbie appear too youthful for the period setting.
The 2009 ITV adaptation cast white actor Tom Hardy as Heathcliff, while Andrea Arnold’s 2011 film version featured black actor James Howson in the role. Howson’s casting more closely aligned with interpretations of the character’s ambiguity ethnicity. As production progresses, observers will watch how Fennell addresses the representation concerns raised around her casting of Heathcliff.
