The hit HBO Max series ‘Peacemaker’ is returning for a second season in 2025. Showrunner James Gunn recently shared details about the new season’s planned release and how it will fit into the expanding DC Universe.
‘Peacemaker’ was a surprise hit when its first season premiered on HBO Max in early 2022. Starring John Cena as the title character, the antihero comedy series was praised by critics and broke viewership records. With the changes in DC’s film and TV leadership, Gunn confirmed Season 2 will arrive in late 2025.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s merger last year brought executive shifts. James Gunn and Peter Safran now oversees DC Studios and are establishing a new interconnected DC Universe continuity called DCU. While Season 1 occurred outside this new universe, Season 2 will take place within it.
To distinguish the rebooted version, Gunn showed a tweaked helmet design for Peacemaker on social media. Other costume or set changes may also signal the reality change to viewers. As one industry expert said, visual updates can address the continuity shift without interrupting the plot.
Cena is set to return in the lead role, which Gunn called “the role he was born to play.” Viola Davis will also reprise her role as Amanda Waller, carrying her character over from previous DC movies. Gunn will share directing duties with Greg Mottola and Peter Sollett due to his increased responsibilities.
When it launches in late 2025, ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 aims to continue the successful blend of humor and action while establishing this new chapter for DC stories on screen. Fans eagerly await its arrival as one of the first projects in the reimagined DC film and TV universe.
