Lionsgate has announced details for the US release of the new film “Small Things Like These.” The drama, set in 1980s Ireland, tells the story of a coal merchant who uncovers secrets kept by the local convent. It is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Irish author Claire Keegan.
The movie will open in US theaters on November 8. It will first debut in the UK and Ireland on November 1. Lionsgate acquired distribution rights for North America, the UK, and Ireland after “Small Things Like These” premiered to critical acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
Starring Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, the film follows Bill Furlong, a devoted father, as Christmas nears in 1985 Ireland. Furlong discovers disturbing truths kept by the convent in his small town. He is then forced to face the silence of his community about these secrets, as well as confronting parts of his own past.
Emily Watson earned high praise for her supporting role, receiving the Silver Bear award at Berlin. Other notable cast members include Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, and Zara Devlin. The project also boasts experienced talent behind the camera. Tim Mielants, known for directing “Peaky Blinders,” directs the film from a screenplay by Enda Walsh, writer of “Hunger” and “Disco Pigs.”
Murphy serves as both lead actor and producer through his company Big Things Films. He has expressed a deep connection to Keegan’s novel, saying he “fell in love with the book” for its ability to tell a specific local story with broad universal themes. Murphy’s passion for the project is evident in his dual roles.
The release of “Small Things Like These” comes during an exciting time in Murphy’s career, following his Oscar win for “Oppenheimer” earlier this year. With its blending of history, moral complexity and star power, the film looks to make an impact during upcoming awards season.
