Jay Blades, the popular host of BBC’s renovation series “The Repair Shop,” has been charged with controlling and coercive behavior towards his estranged wife. Blades appeared in court last week to face charges brought by West Mercia Police following a domestic abuse investigation.
The 54-year-old television personality married his wife, Lisa Zbozen, in November 2021. However, Zbozen announced in May 2022 that the couple had separated. West Mercia Police then launched an investigation that same month, leading to criminal charges against Blades.
In response, the BBC has removed recent episodes of “The Repair Shop” featuring Blades from its broadcast schedule. A network producer commented on the difficulty in changing schedules due to the presenter’s unavailability. The BBC also postponed airing archived segments featuring Blades across multiple shows until the legal process concludes.
Blades rose to fame after starting a furniture restoration charity for at-risk youth. His work then led to appearances on various BBC programs, including his breakout role hosting “The Repair Shop” since 2017. The feel-good series about repairing antique family heirlooms averages 2.5 million weekly viewers.
Born in East London, Blades overcame homelessness and a difficult childhood to find success. He received an MBE in 2017 for his contributions to craftsmanship. However, Blades now faces a criminal trial for domestic abuse allegations arising from his short-lived marriage.
West Mercia Police confirmed charging Blades with controlling and coercive behavior. He will appear in court again in October as the legal process continues. For viewers and the television industry, uncertainties remain around Blades’ career and the long-term future of “The Repair Shop.”
